Ancient Mystras

UNESCO: Archaeological Site of Mystras

Mystras – Greece

The remarkable ruins of Mystras spread across a steep hillside near the modern city of Sparta in the southern Peloponnese. Founded in the 13th century, Mystras became one of the most important cities of the Byzantine Empire during its later centuries.

Churches, monasteries, palaces, and fortified walls climb the mountainside beneath the towering castle at the summit. The city served as a center of culture, learning, and religious life before being gradually abandoned following the Ottoman conquest.

Today Mystras stands as one of the best-preserved Byzantine archaeological sites in Greece and is recognized as a Archaeological Site of Mystras.
