Bojnice Castle – Slovakia
Bojnice Castle rises above the town of Bojnice in western Slovakia at the edge of the Strážov Mountains, part of the western Carpathian range. The castle’s towers and steep slate roofs stand dramatically above the surrounding parkland, giving the structure the appearance of a romantic fairytale fortress.
Although the site originated as a medieval fortification guarding trade routes through the Nitra River valley, the castle was extensively rebuilt in the late nineteenth century by Count János Pálffy, who transformed it into a palace inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley in France. The result is an elaborate complex of towers, courtyards, and decorative stonework surrounded by wooded hills and landscaped gardens.
Today Bojnice Castle is considered one of the most picturesque historic castles in Slovakia and a prominent landmark within the western Carpathian region.
