Bwindi Mountain Gorillas – Uganda

The mountain gorillas of Bwindi live within the dense rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. This ancient forest is one of the last remaining habitats for these rare primates, whose global population numbers only a little more than one thousand individuals.

Guided treks through the forest allow visitors to observe gorilla families in their natural environment. These groups are typically led by a dominant silverback male, who protects the family and guides their movements through the forest.

Encounters with mountain gorillas offer a rare glimpse into the social behavior of one of humanity’s closest relatives and are considered one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences in Africa.

After trekking through steep and densely vegetated forest, we encountered a mountain gorilla family resting and feeding within the understory. The group included a dominant silverback, adult females, juveniles, and infants, all positioned within a remarkably small area of the forest.

At close range, subtle behaviors became especially powerful: infants resting securely against adults, juveniles moving through the group, and the silverback maintaining a calm but unmistakable presence. The encounter felt quiet and respectful, shaped as much by stillness as by movement.
